A volunteer emergency medical technician from Dutchess County is being credited with helping a woman during a medical emergency at the New York City marathon.
Scott Kohn says he saw a female runner struggling to stand and talk just yards away from the finish line of the 26.2-mile race on Nov. 5.
The 37-year-old, who volunteers with the Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps, says he and another runner couldn’t get anyone’s attention through the crowd of runners, so they carried the woman to the finish line where medics were standing by.
“We had her up arm in arm, shoulder to shoulder and we were watching her eyes rolling in the back of her head and her feet were barely moving,” recalls Kohn. “It was like a slow crawl-walk, and literally we were holding her up. It was surreal.”
Kohn says he’s since connected with the woman and the other runner who helped him through Facebook and that, thankfully, the woman is OK.
