Children were welcomed back to Safety Town in Eisenhower Park following a needed refurbishment.

Safety Town is an area of the East Meadow park where children learn the rules of the road.

Over 20 buildings in Safety Town were rebuilt, roads were resurfaced, and new mini cars and bikes were purchased thanks in part to a $110,000 contribution from FirstNet, Built with AT&T and the Nassau County Police Foundation.

"Six months ago, I walked through here looking at some of the buildings that were falling down. They were used to store old files that should've been destroyed years ago, the bikes were falling apart," says Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder.

Students from Saint Martin de Porres in Uniondale were the lucky children who got to try out the new track.

"It's really important for them to learn about traffic safety, to learn about bike safety and being a pedestrian. It's not something they think about every day," says third grade teacher Keri Owens.

Angela Coppola, a Nassau County Police Department crossing guard, says there are a lot of distractions when people are driving today so children need to know their eyes are the most important thing to avoid distracted drivers.
