The elevators at a Mott Haven apartment building in the Bronx have been out of order for weeks, leaving some wheelchair-bound residents stuck in their homes.
Erica Rudder says she hasn’t been outside since Mother’s Day – the last time that she can recall her building’s elevators working.
“It’s a safety issue for me, and not only for me, but for my daughter too being I’m in a wheelchair,” said Rudder.
Rudder lives on the sixth floor of the seven-floor apartment building at 250 East 144th Street, and the Department of Buildings says they’ve issued violations for the ongoing outage.
“God forbid something happen to somebody that’s upstairs on the sixth, seventh floor and EMS has to come,” said resident Dwayne Edwards.
Edwards says he is planning on withholding his June rent since the elevators remain out of service. In the meantime, he says he’s dedicating his time to helping out his disabled neighbors.
“When I do come home, I do bring the extra food that I have and I do offer it to them because I know they can't get up and down the stairs,” said Edwards.
News 12 spoke with Spring Leasing and Management who oversees the building, who has said they’re currently waiting for the parts they ordered to fix the elevator to arrive before the repairs are made.
