News Yorkers that rely on public transportation for work, school, and everything in between are gearing up for a new program.
The city revealed a new 'Fair Fares' program that helps cut MetroCard prices in half for some riders.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this week that 100,000 New Yorkers have already signed up for the 'Fair Fares' program, which offers a significantly reduced rate for eligible commuters.
Under the new program, low-income commuters can get 50% discounted on the train and some bus fares.
Pay-per-ride, weekly, monthly and unlimited ride options will all be available with the program. The city says the goal is to help get people where they need to go, without breaking the bank.
Another goal is to prevent creating a barrier to upward mobility.
Open enrollment for all New Yorkers begins on Jan. 27.
