Sanjai Syamaprasad pleaded guilty to secretly recording patients at the Northwell Health Sleep Disorders Center in Great Neck.
The district attorney said the Brooklyn man used a hidden camera made to look like a smoke detector. Prosecutors said his camera captured recordings of hundreds of people while they were using the bathrooms, including children.
Prosecutors said he also secretly filmed people in the bathroom at STARS Rehabilitation, located in the same building as the sleep center.
Brenda Pellettieri believes she is one of the victims. She said she thinks about it every day. “It’s really destroyed my faith in humanity,” she said. Her attorney Joel Rubenstein, who says he’s representing hundreds of potential victims in this case, said it is difficult to identify victims because their faces aren’t always shown in the videos. He said he has filed multiple class-action lawsuits.
Authorities were able to identify five individuals in the videos, including a child, and the defendant pleaded guilty to five counts of unlawful surveillance.
He also pleaded guilty to two counts of tampering with physical evidence.
The DA said he destroyed evidence, and threw the smoke detector camera and “broken-up SD card” into a trash can at a Brooklyn CVS.
Judge Meryl Berkowitz said she will give the defendant five years’ probation, drawing outrage not only from potential victims, but Nassau’s top prosecutor, too. District Attorney Anne Donnelly said she was disappointed and disgusted. Donnelly wants Syamaprasad behind bars.
The defendant covered his face with a mask and hat as he left the courthouse, ignoring all questions from reporters.
Northwell Health released the following statement:
“Northwell greatly appreciates the efforts of the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office in this matter. We were deeply disturbed when we first learned information regarding the conduct of the former employee, who has not worked here for over one year. We promptly reported his conduct to the DA’s Office, immediately revoked his access to the premises, and fully cooperated in the DA’s Office’s investigation and prosecution of him. Safeguarding the privacy of our patients and employees will always remain a high priority for us.”
