A Bronx tenant spoke one-on-one with News 12’s Julio Avila about being robbed just days after a fire tore through the basement of her apartment building.
The University Heights building caught fire at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the FDNY. A power outage followed, and while the victim didn’t experience any fire damage, she was forced to stay with a relative overnight.
The tenant, who didn’t wish to be named, returned home to opened drawers with clothes taken out and her belongings tossed around, and noticed some of her jewelry and electronics were missing. She also found a portion of the side-latch of her door was broken, which she believes was broken by firefighters.
“I’ve lived here for years and it’s the first time it’s happened to me,” she said. “I don’t usually leave this place because I run a day care. I haven’t heard of any other robberies either.”
Fire marshals are still investigating the cause of the fire, and News 12 is awaiting information from the NYPD on this possible robbery incident.
