The entire wall of a deteriorating, vacant building partially collapsed into a neighbor's backyard in Hunts Point on Monday.
Octavio Warnock-Graham tells News 12 he watched the building’s condition worsen over the years and has been scared to spend time in his backyard due to fears of the wall collapsing.
“It has been an ongoing process of communicating with the city, trying to articulate how much of a hazard it felt having this building vacant and falling into disrepair,” said Warnock-Graham.
The Department of Buildings says the home has had a vacate order in place since Sept. 21, 2023. This was issued after inspectors saw a collapsed roof and brick steps that were in a state of disrepair.
Since the wall fell this week, DOB issued an Emergency Demolition Order at 527 Timpson Place. The agency also issued a violation to the building owner for failure to maintain a structure.
News 12 spoke with the building owner. He is aware and in compliance with the demolition and is working to sell the property.
Warnock-Graham says he’s excited for the demolition so he can safely use his backyard once again.
