A victim of the Haffen Park mass shooting is recounting her horrifying experience for the first time.
Jaylen Murray, 29, was injured when multiple gunmen opened fire on a basketball court at Haffen Park on Aug. 23 in Baychester.
"I feel shocked to be alive, I am thankful to be alive, everyday has been a challenge, I am not really used to living with a bullet in me, as a teacher I am a little sad too I am supposed to starting school with my kids really soon and I can't even do that, but I am thankful to be alive" said Murray.
The kindergarten teacher was attending the back-to-school backpack giveaway and basketball tournament with a friend when she was shot in the back. The bullet remains lodged in her right lung.
"I wanted to go show my appreciation and show my face and hopefully help somewhat with that fundraiser and it went the opposite way unfortunately, something that was supposed to be a beautiful event turned into a tragic nightmare," said Murray.
Murray was sitting on the bleachers just before 7:30 p.m. when she heard what sounded like fireworks go off, she then realized quickly it was gunfire.
"It sounded like 30 to 40 shots at once. I felt if I ran would get hit, if I moved too fast, I would get hit, unfortunately, me still sitting there did end up getting me hit. Once I got hit, I just kind of got in instant mode, the adrenaline just started pumping and I went under the bleachers until the shots stopped," said Murray.
Murray says her friend is an EMT and noticed her bleeding under her arm and immediately got her in the car and drove her to the nearest hospital.
On the court, at least 48 shell casings were found by investigators. Murray was one of four victims to survive.
Jaceil Banks, 32, from the Bronx, died after he was shot in the chest. The youngest victim, Anthonaya Campbell, 17, remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
"I will continue to try and be an advocate for them, my heart is with the families," said Murray.
Four people, including a 16- and 17-year-old have been arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder and gang assault among other charges.
Murray's family has set up a GoFundMe to help with recovery expenses.
