A popular Bronx influencer was one of the latest victims of a brazen chain snatching crime.
The 30-year-old only wants to be known by her TikTok handle, @honeyhunncho.
Honey says her life flashed before her eyes when she was headed to the grocery store on Morrison and East 172nd Street this past weekend.
"But at the end of the day, at least I'm safe and I'm here and alive,” Honey said.
The Soundview mother is still in shock.
"All I see is two guys, masks, with a ski mask on. They have like hoodies,” she recalled. “It was like 90 degrees."
She said as soon as they locked eyes, she knew what was coming.
"He literally just grabbed my chain, ripped it off my neck, like 'pop,'” the mother said.
Honey says the chain was fake and only worth about $100, but that's not the point.
"I just feel like they saw something flashy,” she said. “They were like, OK, not a problem, let me just take it. She's a girl, she's defenseless. She’s not gonna do anything and that's exactly what happened. I didn't do anything. I just screamed."
This isn't an isolated case. So far this year, police have responded to dozens of these crimes, including a 3-year-old boy whose chain was stolen on camera in a Morris Heights apartment building.
Last month, police say thieves on scooters robbed four men in under 30 minutes—beating victims and stealing thousands of dollars in jewelry.
According to NYPD data, grand larceny is up nearly 16% in the 43rd Precinct compared to this time last year.
Police say in many of these cases the suspects are working in pairs, sometimes they're walking like in this case, sometimes they're riding on mopeds, but they act fast - they'll rip off your chain and take off in seconds."
Honey hopes her story will serve as a warning to her neighbors.
"I just think that over a fake chain, I could have lost my life and I don't think it was a smart idea on my behalf to just be wearing the chain.” she said.
