A new man is president of the West Indian American Day Carnival Association, and News 12 is bringing you an exclusive preview of what’s to come this September.
The West Indian American Day Carnival (WIADCA) is a worldwide tradition and it attracts millions to Brooklyn every year. The new president of WIADCA, Roger Archibald, has his eyes set on this year’s carnival.
“I would like to keep that culture going, but making sure that everyone understands the origins of carnival,” said Archibald. “Carnival itself was post slavery expression, it was a form of protest in a way, and from that protest we have evolved today into an amazing celebration that takes place here in Brooklyn.”
The Eastern Parkway will be exploding with colors and culture come September for the annual celebration, as 25 different Caribbean islands will be showcasing their pride.
Archibald says that while the celebration is of paramount importance, it’s also necessary to educate the community on the importance of the day.
Archibald and WIADCA say that this year’s celebration will be even more colorful than usual, and that longstanding traditions like steel drums and masqueraders are here to stay.
