An overnight burglary targeted a bodega in Wakefield – and police are now searching for the suspects responsible.

The store owner said about $7,000 in cash and merchandise was stolen during the break-in, which occurred just after 2 a.m. In addition to the stolen items, a shattered glass door will need to be replaced, adding to what the owner described as a significant financial setback that could take months to recover from.

Surveillance video shows four people approaching the bodega. Three entered the store while another appeared to act as a lookout outside. When an attempt to pick the lock failed, one of the suspects shattered the glass door to gain entry.

Once inside, the suspects removed the cash register and took items including headphones, tobacco products and speakers before fleeing the scene. The entire incident lasted less than three minutes, according to the owner.

“I don’t know how I’m going to pay my employees,” said owner Maged Abdulkarim. “They took their paycheck money.”

Police are reviewing surveillance footage as the investigation continues.
