The Fourth of July fireworks may be festive and fun, but the loud noises can pose a significant threat to pets.
Experts say fireworks can go up to 150 decibels and that can be as loud as a plane taking off. That can cause both physical and emotional damage for our furry friends.
The best thing you can do for your animal is try to be there for them. You want to manage the situation and set them up for success.
Experts say you should not take them with you to watch any firework displays, keep your television or radio on to drown out any loud noises and keep windows closed.
Before those explosions begin, try to give your dogs as much exercise to tire them out.
Next, bring pets inside and keep them as far from fireworks as much as possible.
In addition to closing all windows, closing all of your curtains, playing comforting music or classical music can also help as this helps to dampen the sounds from outside.
Also, never chain or tether your dogs during displays.
"They're at risk of hanging themselves in franctic attempt to escape the explosions, and injured animals can also injure themselves" says PETA's Caroline Schlutius.
Experts also advise you to make sure that your pets are microchipped, that way if they escape, they can be quickly returned to you.
