A community Facebook post about what appeared to be a pile of garbage prompted quick results on City Island.
A community member posted about a pile of clothes strewn about at the corner of City Island Avenue and Carroll Street. When News 12 crews got there, it appeared garbage bags of clothes had been ripped open, with clothes pilling out.
Neighbors say they saw someone dropping them off, they didn't know if the person thought it was a donation site. A woman who lived across the street even started cleaning it herself.
The building is listed for sale, so when News 12 called the realtor about the issue, she was thankful for the call and was going to let the building owner know. In the meantime, News 12 saw DSNY crews clean it up.
DSNY officials say this does appear to be private property, so the owner is responsible or could face fines.
The location is vacant, so they didn't even know about the issue since it happened Monday and was cleaned up by Tuesday. Neighbors say this is not an ongoing issue, just something that popped up and neighbors acted quickly.
