The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced Thursday that Fairfield Metro train station will soon have a new name.

In the next few months, the station will be renamed as the Fairfield-Black Rock station.

Officials say the name change follows the tradition of naming stations based on the town and or geographic area they serve. They say many commuters often confuse the Fairfield and Fairfield Metro stations when using navigation apps.

Improvements to pedestrian safety will also be made at the station, including building new concrete ramps at the street and mid-lot sidewalks and creating a new pedestrian walkway from the street to the platform area.

Work at the station is expected to take three months.

During that time, new signage will be installed.

Websites and travel apps will be also updated and on-board messaging with change.
