An assistant coach for Farmingdale State College's baseball team is accused of using hateful language against a player of an opposing team.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon during a baseball game between Farmingdale and St. Joseph’s of Brooklyn.

Spectators were not allowed in the stands, but those watching heard what some called a racially charged comment.

It was the final inning of the game as sophomore Anthony Hernandez came to the plate before knocking a triple down the line. As he got to third base, he says he heard it.

The voice is of Farmingdale’s assistant coach Michael McCabe shouting at Hernandez. Hernandez says what he heard was “way too go brown boy.” 

Hernandez didn’t want to speak on camera, but his brother Samuel shared his family’s disbelief.

“I'm saddened by it. My family is hurt by it. I actually had to go back a few times myself because I didn't believe it. I thought it was just your typical, you know, intense moment in the game, late in the game, both sides close game, but my initial reaction was like, wow,” says Samuel Hernandez, Anthony’s brother.

News 12 received a statement from the college in regard to the incident, stating:

Farmingdale State College has suspended Assistant baseball Coach McCabe for one year without pay and will require he participate in counseling.  The comments that were made are most inappropriate and do not reflect the college's values and the standards we uphold in our community.

Hernandez asked that he and his family would appreciate privacy at this time as they try to put the incident behind them.
