Officials say a man was killed in the collapse of a two-story home in Borough Park on Friday.
The FDNY says approximately 80 firefighters responded to 1266 50th St. just after 12:10 p.m. Police say upon arrival, they found an unconscious and unresponsive male construction worker.
FDNY officials say that three workers were inside of the basement of the home when the floor collapsed above them. One of those three workers was pinned under the collapsed debris during the incident.
That construction worker was pronounced dead at the scene. No other victims were found inside of the building or in neighboring buildings.
Department of Buildings Commissioner James Oddo said that a partial stop work order was issued to this exact building on Jan. 4 due to two complaints dating back to Dec. 23.
Oddo said that the construction taking place Friday should not have been happening, and that the only work that should have been going on was to improve the safety of the site.
The building will now be sealed off by the DOB and the Housing Preservation and Development agencies. Oddo stated that the fines for violating the stop work order and other miscues could reach six figures, adding that there were no plans submitted to the DOB for the construction that was taking place at the site.
At this hour, officials are still working to determine the true cause of the collapse. DOB officials say that there was construction material on the floor of the first floor in the vicinity of where the floor collapsed.
