An 85-year-old man is dead and several other people are in the hospital after an apartment fire Friday night in Highbridge.

The FDNY said the fire started in a first-floor apartment around 9:30 p.m. at 65 Jesup Place near Jesup Avenue.

Officials say 10 people were hurt including a 45-year-old man, a 70-year-old woman and three firefighters. They were all taken to local hospitals.

As for the 85-year-old man who died, officials have not released his name, but neighbors said he lived alone amid clutter.

“Roaches, mice, rats – whatever, you can name it,” said Emmanuel Ampofo, a displaced tenant. “And I don’t know how many times the Housing Department has come to that apartment.”

The Red Cross told News 12 they’re assisting six displaced tenants from three families.

The FDNY said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
