9h agoFire crews responded to a commercial building fire in Morris Heights Sunday afternoon.
Approximately 25 units and 106 firefighters were called to the four-alarm fire, according to the FDNY.
The blaze happened inside a furniture store on West Burnside Avenue around 3 p.m.
According to the FDNY, "units arrived within three minutes to discover a significant volume of fire. They ended up discovering fire in both the cellar and the first floor."
Assistant Chief Joseph Jardin called it a "labor intensive and time consuming operation that was further challenged by the prevailing weather conditions" in a statement posted online.
"Our troops engaged in
extensive opening up of walls and ceilings, eventually stretching five
hand-lines to fully extinguish the fire. The fire is completely
extinguished and we are just finalizing our overall operations. We
currently have 11 members being cared for by our members of EMS, all
non-life-threatening injuries.”
A bodega owner near the burned furniture store tells News 12 this isn't the first time tragedy struck the space - saying the store was robbed a couple months ago and the store was completely looted last year.
