Firefighters battled a blaze that broke out at a building on Castle Hill Avenue at around 2 p.m. on Monday, according to the FDNY.
Fire officials held a press conference just after 4 p.m. John Esposito, chief of fire operations for the FDNY, says that units arrived to 1103 Castle Hill Ave. three minutes after receiving the call. It is currently believed that the fire originated at 1103 Castle Hill Ave. and spread to 1101 Castle Hill Ave.
The FDNY says that there was heavy fire coming through the roof, causing it to sag and partially collapse. Units and personnel were removed from the roof. Officials say the fires have been contained.
According to EMS Chief Joseph Pataky, the patient count is at eight, with seven firefighters and one civilian all suffering non-life threatening injuries. All eight patients were transported to hospitals with injuries consistent with a combination of smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.
Pataky says that no one was rescued by the firefighters, and that everyone was alerted to evacuate the buildings.
