Authorities say a young boy was killed and a man was critically injured by a fire at the Mitchel Houses in Mott Haven Friday night.
Police say 6-year-old Aiden Hayward was found unconscious in a hallway alongside a 32-year-old man. They were both taken to the hospital.
Officials say the young boy suffered smoke inhalation and was later pronounced dead. The man suffered critical injuries and remains hospitalized.
News 12 was told eight other residents at the Mitchel Houses were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Two firefighters were also treated for injuries.
Police say the fire started in a trash compactor chute, which pushed smoke through the upper floors.
