FDNY: Child dead, mother in stable condition after Bronx fire

Fire officials say a child is dead after flames erupted inside a building in the Bronx.
Crews responded to the fifth floor of the Melrose Houses on East 153rd Street around 9:50 a.m.
News 12 is told emergency responders rushed the child out of the apartment with his father by his side. Police say when he arrived at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln he was pronounced dead.
Officials say the boy died from smoke inhalation. 
The 5-year-old's mother was also injured and is listed in stable condition at the hospital. As the FDNY worked to get the fire under control, they say two firefighters were injured. 
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
