The House of Representatives passed funding Monday for a new green project that would provide new training and jobs in the offshore wind industry in the Bronx.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced that SUNY Maritime College is one step closer to getting the funding it needs for 10 new projects.
Joined by Rep. Thomas Suozzi and cadets at the college, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez explained that the projects will provide entry-level training for high-wage jobs in the offshore wind industry sector for New York state
If the funding goes through, the projects could create up to 5,000 new jobs including designers, operators, installers and inspectors by 2035.
The funding would also go toward building new boats and stations for training.
The federal funding still needs to be passed in the Senate, and the congresswoman says they’re making good progress.
If it goes through, the programs could be running by 2022.
