The mother of a 13-year-old girl who was killed in a gang-related shooting could receive $9.6 million in settlement funds - that’s the recommendation of a federal magistrate judge.

The incident occurred on New Year’s Eve 2016 when Nadine McKenzie was driving with her daughter Shamoya, a rising basketball star.

Shamoya became an innocent victim of a gang-related shooting when she was shot in the head.

Four men involved in the crime are currently serving lengthy prison sentences.

McKenzie filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against the men and others involved in the shooting. She says that while the recommendations won't ease her pain, she hopes it will send a powerful message to the community.

“I want others to understand that you can’t just kill someone and get away with it. This is a lesson for them to learn,” McKenzie said.

The recommended settlement now awaits approval from a federal judge.
