A cyberattack at Tenafly Public School District has canceled final exams and left administration scrambling to find solutions -- while some students say it was a blessing.
Students got a break as the district's computer system is offline because of a cyberattack. While it's enjoyable for some students, the genesis behind it is a bit more nefarious after a ransomware attack crippled the districts computer systems.
Tenafly schools aren't the only district affected by cyberattacks. Back in early 2021, Hillsboro and Bernards also had their own run-ins with cybercriminals.
The attack was noticed by district leaders last Thursday. Since then, district has hired a cybersecurity team to fight back. The FBI is involved and negotiations with the cybercriminals have occurred.
District leaders say they had plans to implement new cybersecurity measures on July 1, a month too late combatting the current cybercrime. Officials don't believe students are involved, and finals are not expected to be rescheduled as students' access to study materials was interrupted due to the attack.
News 12 is told portions of the district's computer systems are once again up and running but additional work remains.
School leaders say they had cybersecurity measures in place and also say they have insurance to cover cybercrimes like this.
