Fines for not composting set to begin on April 1
Fines will start at $25 and go up to $100 for repeated violations for buildings with one to eight units.

The Department of Sanitation made composting mandatory back in October and issued warnings to those who don’t comply.
The agency will issue property owners a fine if they don’t compost, starting April 1.

For buildings with eight units or more, fines will start at $100 and go up to $300.
Aazam Otero, from the Morning Glory Community Garden, tells News 12 that the garden relies on compost every time they plant.
“It really helps with the nutrients that are taken out by the plants that we're harvesting. It adds them back in,” Otero said.
Any food waste, yard waste and food soiled paper can be composted.
Simply separate it from your regular trash, put it in a bin with a lid and put it outside on recycling day.
