A fire ripped through an apartment in Kingsbridge on Van Cortlandt Park West Thursday morning.
Flames were bursting out of the windows of the seventh-floor apartment, as seen in Citizen App video. The screams for help led neighbors to call 911. People in the building rushed out into the morning cold to safety.
Those calls just after 4 a.m. were followed by nearly 150 firefighters responding to get the fire under control. The lieutenant says the quick response by the FDNY kept the fire from spreading further.
Officials say five people sustained minor injuries along with three firefighters. The Red Cross says it is working to find those who were displaced a place to stay. They say 48 units have been vacated as the building is flooded and remnants of the fire are left behind.
At this time, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
