Route 35 in Sayreville is back open after being closed in both directions due to a four-alarm fire that spread from a home to a Mavis Discount Tire store near South Hillcrest Avenue.

Fire officials say the fire started around 3 p.m. with a garbage pile outside of the home.

Sayreville Fire Chief Rich Masterson said that the adjacent house next door to the Mavis had a garbage pile that caught fire.

"And their garage caught fire, extended into the Mavis and resulted to the roof collapsing," he says.

He says four cars were being worked on, which are now damaged.

One of the cars belongs to Blessing Eboigbe, who had just dropped it off for a tire change.

"It was taking longer than expected, and I had to step out. A few minutes later, I heard an explosion, then I looked behind and saw smoke coming out," said Eboigbe.

Employees at Mavis called customers to share the news.

"They said they don't know the extent of the damages yet, but they said whatever they have, they will let me know," said Eboigbe.

Mavis is making arrangements for her to get to and from work until she can drive again.

"It's just unfortunate," she added.

Chief Masterson said no one was injured, and a firefighter was able to rescue two cats from the apartment above the tire shop.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
