The FDNY says a two-alarm fire ripped through an abandoned church in West Farms Monday afternoon.
The fire broke out minutes after 4 p.m. Monday inside of Beck Memorial Church. Over 100 firefighters were needed to battle the flames, and it took them almost two hours to put out that fire.
The FDNY says there were no injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The fire is heartbreaking for the community, and something residents in the area say was bound to happen since no one has stepped foot inside for years
Community Board 6 says it wrote a letter to the Presbytery of New York City back in March of 2024 stating concern about the conditions of the building and asking that at minimum it appoint someone to be in charge of maintaining the building.
People in the area say they hope that officials will remember this the next time there's an abandoned building, as a warning of what can happen if it's allowed to just sit there and slowly fall apart.
