A three-alarm fire at a 99-cent store in Mount Eden claimed the life of a firefighter Sunday when the floor collapsed.
Authorities say 25-year-old Michael Reilly was a rookie with four months on the job, but he served in Iraq before joining the FDNY. Reilly was among 138 firefighters to respond to the blaze at 1575 Walton Ave. about 1 p.m. Officials say the floor collapsed, burying five of New York?s bravest under debris in the basement. While Reilly died, four others survived.
Employees called for help when they could not put out the flames, which started behind a fridge. Customers were also in the store at the time of the fire. Investigators do not believe it is suspicious.
