The overnight coastal storm flooded some areas in New Jersey, including Manasquan.

Since then, the flood waters have mostly receded on Brielle Road.

Residents said they were woken up overnight as the winds howled outside and the storm soaked the area.

“It was very windy all night long into the early morning and, at about 2:15 a.m., it sounded like a freight train going through town, and I was wondering if I was going to wake up this morning and hear a tornado did indeed touchdown in Manasquan because that’s what it sounded like to me,” said resident Dina Giguere.

On Monday morning, waves crashed up and over onto the pavement at the inlet around high tide at 7 a.m. Those waves drew surfers like Michael Caprino, from Long Beach, New York, to the area.

“Woke up at 6 a.m. and just hopped in the car with my board and saw there was a big swell coming through," Caprino said. “On the East Coast, we don’t always get the big waves like Hawaii or California, so when I see big waves coming through, I just have got go with them, so normally chasing any type of storm like a blizzard or nor’easter, hurricane, so that’s what we live for.”

The storm attracted many people who were off from work because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to the beach to check out what the winter storm left behind.

“I biked down Main Street and I went through it a few significant puddles, but I got up here," Giguere said. She was one of many residents that were surprised that there wasn't any major damage from the storm.
