Of giving the Food Bank of New York City wants to help combat hunger. Here in our borough currently, over 18% of Bronx residents are considered food insecure. So we want to head out to the Food Bank of New York City right here in the Bronx with so much theologist Alan. No, who's on the road? A yeah, a Christie. Listen, it's a pretty, pretty important day today. Giving Tuesday. This is the time where the food bank for NYC is doing one of its most busiest days. It's been hustle and bustle ever since about six in the morning where people come in and have loading, unloading. Very and again, this is just in the last couple of hours because you'd see all the different kinds of perishable foods, lots of canned food. You're also seeing different kinds of produce vegetables and what the food bank for New York City does in the last year alone. And in 2022 they distributed more than 95 million meals across New York City and that includes £21 million of fresh produce to New Yorkers in need. Now, keep in mind for us here in the Bronx, the food bank for New York City provides nearly 16.2 million free meals per year to member charities and schools in the Bronx. That's almost a quarter of the food bank's city wide total food distribution. And here even in the Bronx, the average price for a meal is $4.03 then that's up nearly 10% from 2021. So as food prices go up, food insecurity also a major issue. And the food bank for New York City has been doing an incredible job trying to help out New Yorkers and Bronx sites in need. And we've been here all morning. We've been speaking as well with Leslie and Bob. It's been an amazing morning. As you can see the hustle and bustle, it has no quit. It'll be here all day and they're helping out Bronx sites and your local food pantries. That's the latest here from the food bank for New York City on Hunts Point. I'm Meteor of Sal Nosa News 12. Meteorologist Alan Nose is on the road at the Food Bank for us this morning. Alan, how are they participating in giving Tuesday this year? They give back all your wraps. But how are they, what is special about giving Tuesday? Right. Right. As Christie, especially on a day, like today, it's super important that we basically get through the Giving Tuesday. It's a fairly new one as well. And, and today this is one of the busiest days of the year. It's like a special dance that goes on between all the different machines. You can see some of those products as well, especially canned goods, the perishable items and to talk a little bit more about giving Tuesday and how the Food bank works. We're going to introduce the heart of the president and Ceo Leslie Gordon. Thank you so much for having us here today. So, tell me a little bit more about giving Tuesday and why is it so important? Yes. So this morning, we're right here at Food Bank for New York City. Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to help your New York City neighbors live their best life, take a little stress out of their lives by ensuring that they've got access 365 days a year to good nutritious food. We're talking about good fresh produce and vegetables, chicken poultry beef. You name it every neighborhood, nearly every street. If you're talking about Brooklyn, for example, we're talking about Red Hook bed, Stuy East New York, Williamsburg. You name it. As you can see a lot of busy action behind me. All the trucks unloading, loading as well for one of the busiest days of the year, all kinds of food, produce, canned items as well. And to talk a little bit more about this important holiday, we're going to bring in the heart of the operation president and Ceo Leslie Gordon. Good morning. So let's talk a little bit more about giving Tuesday. What is it? And how is it so important to the food bank? Yeah, so good morning to everybody watch from Food Bank for New York City, right in the heart of the Bronx. Giving Tuesday is really important. It's a wonderful opportunity for New Yorkers to help their neighbors here at Food Bank for New York City. We have a commitment to ensuring that everybody has access to good nutritious food, hunger doesn't take a holiday. So we're making sure that everybody has what they need. Even culturally relevant foods on nearly every street and nearly every neighborhood right here in our great city. Today is the day. It's one of the busiest days of the year here and they're helping out by providing many New Yorkers, of course, the food to make sure everyone is not food insecure. It's gotten really busy here over the last half hour. I'm going to actually take a step back so you can see just how busy some of the things are pretty much going around here on this Giving Tuesday and so talk a little bit more about it. We're going to bring in Chief Operations and Procurement Officer for the Food Bank of New York. Bob Sylvia Bob. Thank you so much for being here. Good morning. So tell me a little bit more about what giving Tuesday is and how important it is giving Tuesday. You know, one of our most important days of the year where people can really give back to their food bank and really support their communities. We've got about 1.2 million food insecure people in New York City, 29% of that happen to be in Brooklyn. A matter of fact, we're loading the Brooklyn trucks right now. Getting ready to go out, they'll be gone in about a half hour. So I would say, yeah, it's a really busy day today. Yeah. So for perspective, for it comes to all five boroughs of the city. And if you were to basically line up all of the vehicles, how long is that? How much food is my favorite. So if we were to line up all the trucks that we're going to receive and distribute this year, the trucks nose to nose would last for 20 miles. That's how much food we're going to distribute this year. That's incredible. And for not only just a day like today where it's giving Tuesday, but to help out the food bank in general, how can Brooklynites and New Yorkers help out? Well, this is your way of showing that you care about your neighbors, right? Everybody's food that is food insecure this time of year. They really feel the strain. And this is a perfect opportunity when you donate to the food bank, we're going to give all that food back to the soup kitchens and pantries in your neighborhood. Exactly, especially on a cold day like today and throughout the winter, how the effort are going to change as well throughout, let's say, into the winter season. Absolutely. I mean, we don't want people making decisions at this time of year around whether or not they should buy their children's medication or get food. We want them to have both. Awesome. They do so much good work for the community for those who are hungry so much. Alan, what's going on. Yeah. Yeah. No, you're exactly right. A and Christy, it's a pretty busy day here as well, but it's always busy here at the food bank who were here at Hunts Point and just take a look at just the tiny sample of so many different things that are out here, different kinds of fruit. A lot of uh canned food items as well and to talk a little bit more about giving Tuesday and what works here. Basically, what makes this operation so special? We have Bob Sylvia Chief Operations and Procurement Officer here at the Food Bank. Thank you so much for having us. Good morning. So tell me a little bit more. What is giving Tuesday? Why is it so important giving Tuesday, you know, is one of our most important fundraising days of the year. It gives us an opportunity to continue serving the people of New York. There are 1.2 million food insecure people in New York City, 23% of that is in the Bronx, just in the Bronx where we put 23% of our food. This year, we do approximately 95 million meals, significant amounts. So, so tell me a little bit more about how day to day operations work and, and how it's really important on a day like today as well. Well, I mean, this time of year is more important than any other, right. So we, we want to make sure that we're doing culturally relevant foods so people can really enjoy the holidays and that people who are food insecure are not having to make decisions wrong, wrong food. You shouldn't have to choose between medicine for your kid and food, right? You shouldn't do that and to put things into perspective, you know, how many items are coming out of this facility, you know, all the trucks this time of morning to put it in perspective. How long is that? That's a great number. So if we were to stack our trucks end to end for every truck that we're going to deliver this year, they would stretch 20 miles. That's how many trucks we're going to deal with this year. And if you can help out on a day like today on giving Tuesday. What are some ways people can do that?
