Thousands of mourning police officers lined the streets of Massapequa Thursday for an NYPD sergeant's final farewell.
Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, a 19-year NYPD veteran from Huntington, was killed by a Brentwood man in the Bronx on Friday afternoon.
The funeral was held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Merrick Road in Massapequa.
About 20,000 officers from across the country, including some from Canada, lined the streets outside the church to salute the fallen officer one final time. The father of two children was eulogized by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
"We feel your pain, we feel your loss, we are here for you," said the mayor. "He fought the evil around us."
Sgt. Tuozzolo was fatally shot Friday afternoon during a confrontation with a suspect who was wanted for breaking into the home of his estranged wife. Another NYPD officer, Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, was shot in the leg and has since been released from the hospital.
The suspect, Manuel Rosales, of Brentwood, was killed at the scene. Police say he had a long rap sheet that included 17 arrests in Suffolk County.
Archbishop of New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan was on hand for the funeral, as well as Monsignor Robert J. Romano - who gave the homily at NYPD Officer Brian Moore's funeral in Seaford last year.
The funeral included a "missing man" flyover with police helicopters. A private burial was then held at St. Charles Cemetery in East Farmingdale.
Sgt. Tuozollo was promoted posthumously to sergeant special assignment, which will monetarily benefit his wife, Lisa, and his 3- and 4-year-old sons Austin and Joseph.
The sergeant is the fifth line-of-duty officer to be shot and killed since December 2014.
