Loved ones and fellow members of the NYPD gathered to say a final farewell to the Bronx officer killed while working security at a building in Midtown.
During the funeral, NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch promoted Officer Didarul Islam to detective first-grade.
A sea of first responders lined the streets in Parkchester for the funeral services.
There were several road closures and detours in the area due to the funeral.
Islam’s family visited the mosque Wednesday, visibly overcome with emotion.
Those who know him say he will be remembered as a man with a big heart.
Islam’s father was escorted by NYPD officers from the mosque.
Islam leaves behind a wife, who is eight months pregnant, and two young children.
Islam had served with the NYPD since 2021, most recently at the 47th Precinct.
The president of the Police Benevolent Association says this kind of loss is every police family's worst fear and is deeply felt throughout the NYPD.
Islam will be laid to rest in New Jersey.
The NYPD says it will support Islam's family in any way it can.
