Commuters tired of construction on the Major Deegan Expressway can breathe a sigh of relief as the governor announced the completion of the $121 million project.
Drivers will now have a clean ride in both directions on the expressway between West 161st Street and the Alexander Hamilton Bridge. Gov. Hochul praised the finished highway, saying that drivers can expect less traffic and a safer ride.
The construction added a northbound auxiliary lane between West 161st Street and Depot Place. The governor said this will reduce backups that typically happen at this spot and expedite traffic heading to Westchester County. They also installed a new traffic light at West 167th Street and Sedgwick Avenue.
Some minor finishing work will be seen over the next few weeks, specifically on the Depot Place overpass over the expressway.
