Gov.
Kathy Hochul is increasing funding for gun violence prevention across the
state.
The
governor joined community organizers and state officials in Brownsville on
Thursday morning to announce $13.6 million to combat gun violence.
The
investment includes $2.5 million to coordinate crime analysis centers with a
task force that includes nine states. It also includes $2 million to help
victims and families of gun violence in Queens.
Another $9 million will fund up to 150 credible messenger
positions statewide, such as outreach workers and violence
interrupters, with half of those for the five boroughs.
This
announcement is Hochul’s latest effort in the state’s public health
initiative to address gun violence.
While
new NYPD numbers indicate shootings in New York City have gone down
since last year, community advocates and officials say there is a lot to be
done to combat gun violence in our city.
