A 72-year-old woman was killed and two others were injured, including the driver, after a car crashed into a bus stop bench in Co-op City Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The crash happened just after 1:30 p.m. on Bartow Avenue, where investigators say the driver of a red car plowed into a bench where people were sitting and waiting for a bus.
By the time first responders arrived, the woman was already dead.
Police have identified the victim as Ramonita Colon.
A 36-year-old man who was sitting on the bench and a 55-year-old man who was inside the vehicle were both taken to a hospital in stable condition, according to police.
Neighbors described a chaotic and emotional scene in the aftermath.
“We are grieving, sir… we are grieving,” one person said.
Hillary Morrison, who said she frequently waits at the same bus stop, stood across the street in disbelief.
“We wait at the bus stop all the time… and when I heard what happened, I said, ‘Oh God’… I said, ‘Lord, thank you, I wasn't there,’” she said.
Another neighbor said they saw victims being pulled from the wreckage.
“I come over here and I see people pulled out,” the person said.
The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating what led to the crash. No arrests have been made.
