'He was resilient.' Fairfield hockey player Charlie Capalbo dies after several bouts with cancer

After multiple bouts with cancer, Fairfield hockey goalie Charlie Capalbo has died.
Capalbo's story was followed closely by the hockey world and so many people here in Connecticut.
His family says he died at 3 p.m. Sunday, exactly a month from his 24th birthday.
Capalbo was fighting cancer for a fourth time and leukemia for a third time.
"We all wanted him to be able to have peace and to be not in pain," said his mother Jennifer Capalbo.
Charlie Capalbo spent five years in hospitals and his family says he never gave up.
"We will continue to honor him every breath and every step we take," said his father Anthony Capalbo.
Capalbo's battle with cancer got national attention. His brother Will was his bone marrow donor in his second fight with the disease.
Soon, NHL players and coaches were visiting him and sending messages, and the local community came out to support him every step of the way - from parades to all kinds of celebrations.
"He was amazing. He inspired people. He was resilient," said Charlie Capalbo's Uncle Paddy, who broke down in tears talking about him.
At the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport Monday where Charlie Capalbo played most of his hockey hangs a Capalbo Strong banner.
"This was a wonderful kid. This was a kid that made a difference in people's lives and we're so sorry that he's gone from us," said state Sen. Tony Hwang.
Many thoughts and prayers are being posted on the Friends of Charlie Capalbo Facebook page
The family says there is talk of a large memorial service for Charlie Capalbo that will be open to the public.
