A fire believed to have been caused by an electrical malfunction destroyed a restaurant in Whiting on Saturday.

The blaze broke out just before 2:30 p.m. at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, according to local police. Owner Gary Mulligan said multiple fire departments responded and arrived quickly, but the damage was still significant. The fire also damaged the neighboring liquor store and bar, Whiting Bar and Spirits.

No one was injured, but Mulligan said the loss has been devastating.

“Heartbreak,” he said when asked how he felt after seeing the damage. “My whole life savings are here. To see everything a mess like this… This is my community. They love us. We love them. To see that, that’s horrible.”

Despite the destruction, Mulligan said friends and community members have already offered to help with cleanup. He said he hopes to reopen within the next few months.
