In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, News 12 is honoring a Bronx native who is making a difference in the community he grew up in.

Jose Cruz is the director of building operations for C and C Apartment Management. They specialize in affordable housing developments like Baychester, close to where Cruz grew up.

He says he takes pride in improving the properties and the quality of life for residents.

Cruz says growing up in the South Bronx was far from easy but working hard was in his blood.

"My father taught me to be the best at what you’re doing, take pride, he said. If you’re a shoeshine boy, make sure everybody you know has a shiniest shoes around,” said Cruz.
