The abandoned Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Mount Hope is raising concerns in the community after being abandoned.

The church was built in 1920 having over 100 years of history to it.

After years of decline, it's now abandoned and riddled with trash.

Community Activist Sidney Flores visited the church 16 years ago when he says the downfall started.

"It has nice parts to it but I saw where the walls were cracking," said Flores.

There are currently 45 violations issued by the Department of Buildings since 2008 that remain open at this property.

According to the Department of Finance, the owners of the church owe over $360,000 in taxes and fees. Council member Oswald Feliz says its unacceptable.

"Garbage, broken windows, graffiti.. this community deserves better than that," says Feliz.

As for what's next, an online real estate platform shows the church is listed for sale and currently under contract.

News 12 reached out to the Pilgrim United Church but has not heard back.
