The Hoboken PATH station will be closing on Feb. 1 for 25 days. The Port Authority will be starting track replacement and a terminal rehab.

Specifically, the Port Authority says it will be replacing the in-station track and 4,500 feet of track, which cars use to get into the station.

Commuters at the PATH station who just learned about the closure on Thursday say that they are supportive of the improvements, but the 25 days without PATH will be a challenge.

Dan Nunes lives in Jersey City Heights but the Hoboken station is the closest for him and his daily commute to New York City.

“It just makes my commute a lot longer. This has been the most convenient station for me,” Nunes says. “Having to go over to like Jersey City to catch it at Newport, it adds 30-40 minutes to my commute.”

But for others, the inconvenience won’t be as severe. Annmarie Kordish travels to Hoboken to see her boyfriend about three to four times a month.

“Probably pretty mild, I could go without coming to Hoboken for 25 days straight,” she says. "I think to come over here, I would just take the bus…It’s really convenient for me to take the PATH because I get off at 33rd and then I take the Q. I live on the Upper East Side."

Other improvements will include the replacement of four staircases, along with new walkways.

Port Authority officials say they realize this work will create commuting issues but the goal is to get the work done in one clip.

“It allows us to fast-track extensive repair work within the station and critical infrastructure around it that otherwise would have involved years of intermittent closures if we performed it piecemeal,” Port Authority executive director Rick Cotton said in a statement.

The Port Authority says if they didn’t have the 25-day closure the work on the tracks would linger over four weekend shutdowns and would include another 50 days of reduced service.

Cross-honoring will be available, on buses, ferries and light rail.

There will be public meetings about the work that is planned. The first is set for 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 in Hoboken Terminal.
