House minority leader Jeffries endorses Mamdani for NYC mayor
House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries has endorsed Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor.
Jeffries released a statement on Friday to the New York Times saying Mamdani has "relentlessly focused on addressing the affordability crisis and explicitly committed to being a mayor for all New Yorkers, including those who do not support his candidacy."
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and other senior Democratic officials in New York have already expressed support for Mamdani.
State Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs previously said he will not endorse Mamdani.
Senate minority leader Charles Schumer has not yet endorsed anyone.
Analysts say Mamdani's progressive stances could be a liability for some in the Democratic Party.
Early voting in New York begins on Saturday.
Jeffries released the following statement:
“I deeply respect the will of the primary voters and the young people who have been inspired to participate in the electoral process. Zohran Mamdani has relentlessly focused on addressing the affordability crisis and explicitly committed to being a Mayor for all New Yorkers, including those who do not support his candidacy. Together, along with Mark Levine and Jumaane Williams, they won the nominations for Mayor, Comptroller and Public Advocate in a free and fair election. In that spirit, I support him and the entire citywide Democratic ticket in the general election.
For decades, working class neighborhoods of color have been hurt by gentrification and housing displacement. That must change. I support our nominee’s strong commitment to building a City where everyday New Yorkers can afford to live. By necessity, this must involve a meaningful partnership with the private sector to dramatically increase the supply of affordable homes.
Assemblyman Mamdani has promised to focus on keeping every New Yorker safe, including the Jewish community that has confronted a startling rise in antisemitic incidents as well as Black and Latino neighborhoods that have battled deadly gun violence for years. The Assemblyman has explicitly made clear that public safety for these communities will be a top priority, a promise strongly reaffirmed by his commitment to retaining current Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. That is the approach that this moment requires.
As with any Mayor, there will be areas of agreement and areas of principled disagreement. Yet, the stakes are existential. Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress have unleashed an unprecedented assault on the economy, ripped healthcare away from my constituents, weaponized the Department of Justice against our state’s Attorney General and ordered masked agents to callously target law-abiding immigrant families.
The communities I represent in Brooklyn are being devastated by this extreme version of the Republican Party. In this environment, we have a clear obligation to push back against the national nightmare being visited on the American people by Republican extremism. Donald Trump must be given no space to haunt the people of New York City.
I endorse the Democratic ticket.”
