House Speaker Mike Johnson visited the tri-state area as the battle for control of Congress intensifies, sitting down with News 12's senior reporter Tara Rosenblum for a wide-ranging, exclusive conversation.

With November elections approaching, Johnson addressed key issues driving voters at the ballot box, including the rise of democratic socialists, immigration, Iran - and one of the top concerns for local families: affordability.

When asked what argument he would make to local families struggling financially to show they are better off under Republican leadership in Washington, Johnson emphasized the party's focus on economic relief.

"Affordability and the cost of living is always the No. 1 issue in every election... it's about kitchen table issues. What we're proud to tout is the record that we've had of achievement. Remember, we inherited from Biden-Harris after four years, the highest inflation in 40 years. You don't just flip a switch and fix that," he said. "We went to work on Day 1, at the beginning of this Congress to January before last, begin to adjust public policy to bring down the cost and help hardworking families."

Johnson also highlighted legislative milestones from the current Congress, including:

  • 800 pieces of legislation codifying 125 executive orders

  • Cutting nearly $2 trillion in government spending

  • The Working Families Tax Cut

"The average New Yorker has $4,079 more in their bank account right now that they did not have to send to Washington because we gave them the largest tax cut in U.S. history," he says.
