Greenwood Cemetery held a tribute for the late neo-expressionist painter Jean-Michael Basquiat.  

Hundreds of New Yorkers gathered for a night dedicated to keeping one of our nation’s most talented artist’s work alive. Basquiat is best known for his bold and expressive work, and is a Brooklyn native with Haitian and Puerto Rican roots.  

Much of Basquiat’s work explored themes of identity, racism and urban culture. Local artists' work was on display at the tribute, honoring his influence in the space.

Basquiat died when he was 27 years old.  

The staff at Greenwood Cemetery say that Basquiat’s gravesite is one of the most visited, and that the event was a year in the making.
