Hungry For Change rings in New Year by helping less fortunate
Some Bronx community members gathered in Eastchester Tuesday to ring in the New Year – and help the needy.
Members of Hungry For Change gathered to make bagged lunches and hot meals for the less fortunate.
The group was founded five years ago when Darnell Liburd and his friends decided to deviate from their normal New Year's Eve routine and give back to the underprivileged.
Members brought food to Grand Central Station and handed the items out to the homeless on their way to the Port Authority. The organization says they made close to 500 meals this year.
Liburd says this is a more rewarding way to spend New Year's Eve.
"We usually, normally would go out and spend hundreds of dollars on bottles in the club and enjoy ourselves for a short period of time," Liburd says. "So we said to change the narrative--let's go out and give back."
The organization now has several sponsors, some of which help provide the food.
Hungry For Change is planning several trips to deliver food to the less fortunate across the East Coast.
