News 12's Julio Avila takes you through the aftermath of Hurricane Maria on the five-year-anniversary of it's arrival to Puerto Rico.

Letting you know, you have to bundle up for it. Oh, it's going to be super cold out there but dry though, right? Any sort of rain or snow because I know we had those festive flakes yesterday. But listen, it's going to be layers upon layers. If we're heading out towards the Rockefeller center tree lighting tonight, the winds are also going to be blustery, which is why it's going to feel colder than what the thermometer says. Wind gust forecast pretty much. You're seeing those 15 to 25 mile per hour into the lighter morning and the afternoon hours. So the wind's not going anywhere anytime soon. At least not today. It's gonna make it feel quite a bit colder. So later on this morning again, it feels like temperatures teens to around 20 not much of an improvement this afternoon. So heading out for lunch, maybe pack that lunch though right now before you head out the door. So you don't have to be outside an extra bit longer because take a look at 27 degrees that feels like temperature for Bathgate as well as more Sanny at 26 for Mott Haven 26. For Colum Bay feels like temperature at around noon today into the afternoon and evening. We'll see a little bit of an improvement, but again, twenties more or less. Will we feel like temperatures again? 23 for Park Chester and North Bay Chester at about eight o'clock this evening into the overnight hours. We'll see those temperatures stumble again but not as cold as this morning. This morning is going to be the coldest morning tomorrow, not as cold but still bundle up because it feels like temperatures 23 26 20 three. It's still going to be a cold start. Tomorrow morning, improvements begin into the afternoon as the sunshine comes up, the wind changes direction to more of a southerly wind and that's a milder wind. So the temperatures are going to start off near freezing tomorrow into the afternoon, get up into the middle, maybe even upper 40. So hour by hour, you could see us getting up to about 47 to 48 degrees into the afternoon. The next weather story is actually going to be rain on the way for Friday afternoon. It starts off north and west, but I think by about two or three P ma couple of showers are possible and then likely for the evening commute. There's going to be a little bit of an issue though for Friday evening's commute, maybe make a little bit earlier of a get away there Friday afternoon and then the weekend is looking ok for now, the big, the big thing here is that it will be near 50 degrees. We enjoy that. Ok. So that's the plus side there, back to some normal t rain with that. All right, Alan, thank you one a few minutes.

In terms of the weather for that tree lighting to be cold, feels like temperatures, they're going to be in the twenties. So I know layers is always recommended but add an extra thermal layer or two or three because it's going to be blustery. It's going to be cold. Again, these wind gusts not as high as yesterday, but this is enough to make it feel extra cold out there. Again, about 20 MPH gusts into the afternoon and these will continue into the evening as well. That'll make it feels like temperatures quite a bit colder. So later on this morning, even in the next hour or so again, it feels like temperatures no matter where you are 20 or below if you want to pack your lunch right now before you head out the door. So you don't have to be outside an extra bit. That's a recommendation from me because take a look at lunchtime, this is at 12 noon. Feels like temperatures Bay Ridge, 27 Park Slope, same deal Bushwick as well. 27 Sheepshead Bay and Coney Island 27. So it's going to be a cold afternoon, pretty cold evening. As well. So this is at 8 p.m. right before the tree lighting. And again in Manhattan, pretty much same deal, middle and upper twenties for the fields like temperatures 26 for Flatlands, 27 for Bushwick 27 for winds will slowly subside throughout the overnight hours and the temperatures are not going to be as cold tomorrow morning. I'd still classify it as cold but not bitterly cold. So it feels like temperatures out the door. Tomorrow will not be in the teens. There'll be about 26 for Williamsburg, 26 for Bay Ridge, 24 for Flatland. So not as bad and the improvements really get going into the afternoon. Lots of sunshine just started about 32 and we get up well into the forties. So improvements much milder definitely will make it feel better out and about for the afternoon hours getting up to about 47 degrees for the afternoon. But with this warm weather, we see the clouds on the increase and then here comes some showers into the afternoon for Friday. So it's going to be a wet finish to the work week. And after three o'clock expect some more of the showers could be a little bit heavier at times for the evening commute. So definitely keep that in mind for late Friday as well as Friday evening plans weekend. Not too bad, but a little bit more rain late Sunday. All right, Alan, thank you.

Hurricane Maria: 5 years later

and Hurricane Fiona. Reopening wounds that Puerto Ricans have tried to heal from after Hurricane Maria struck the island five years ago, coincidentally, that anniversary is coming just a day after Hurricane Fiona struck the island. And news tells Julio Avila spoke with the Bronx pastor with deep Puerto Rican ties about the anniversary and how the island is still on its path toward healing Julio. Okay, yeah, the images of hurricane Maria are still fresh on a lot of people's minds and sadly they're just being relived right now due to Hurricane Fiona and that includes reverend Oswald Dennis. He's a Puerto Rican himself with family down in Puerto rico inundation of the houses, the property businesses, it's images and stories reverend Oswald Dennis remember seeing and being told about from his family in Puerto rico, I was five years ago. Um and still today some of my family members are still suffering the hurricane Maria despite the devastation happening hundreds of miles away, it struck the hearts of Puerto Ricans living in the Bronx and new york city relatives tried to reach their loved ones and reverend Dennis remembers the constant battle he faced trying to reach his family down there. There were times that the phone just went blur because communication and the lighting were out the power but eventually got in contact with my mom and other relatives and everybody's alive, everybody as well. But the death toll was in the thousands. Hurricane Maria made landfall just after six in the morning on september 20th 2017 as a category four hurricane. The National weather service reported winds as high as 155 MPH with the entire island engulfed by wind and rain. Once the damage was seen and losses realized, Dennis says he and pastors from several churches across the city provided a helping hand for those in Puerto rico. From here we collected canned goods, clothing and we sit down to Puerto rico and everybody got their goodies and it was wonderful. But Fiona left devastation on the island this week mirroring the effects seen by Maria. But as the reverend says, Puerto rico's resilience, Puerto rico's will stand up. Fiona will not keep us down. Now after that interview, the pastor did tell us that he was on his way to a meeting in Harlem where he was going to be meeting with church leaders to discuss relief efforts for Puerto Ricans. After Hurricane Fiona, just like they did for Maria. There was even talks of possibly sending out, sending down a delegation there as well. We're in Melrose and Julio Avila News 12. All your life
