The amount of people who can dine indoors at New York City restaurants is increasing to 35% capacity beginning today.
It's been two weeks since indoor dining was allowed again in the city. On Feb. 12, restaurants could have guests inside at 25% capacity.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement to increase that capacity one week ago.
The decision for today's increase was made to be in line with the rules in New Jersey, where bars and restaurants are allowed at 35% capacity. Gov. Cuomo said that people from the city have been going to the neighboring state.
Restaurants outside of New York City are allowed to operate at 50% capacity— something that restaurant owners and advocates in the city want to see happen soon.
However, Gov. Cuomo has said the density and concentration in the city makes that tougher to do.
This change comes as the city's seven-day average positivity rate is down to 4.5%. Gov. Cuomo said that if that percentage keeps lowering, the capacity percentage at city restaurants will be increased.
