Another inmate has died at Riker’s Island following a medical episode.

Officials say an officer discovered a man in need of medical attention and immediately provided aid just after midnight.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Edwin Ramos, 38, has been identified as the victim by the NYC DOC.

The city’s Correction Commission released a statement saying, "Mr. Ramos tragically passed away after being transported to the hospital. The care of everyone who resides in our facilities is our highest priority, and we mourn his loss. Our deepest sympathies go out to his loved ones. The incident will be thoroughly investigated.”

The Legal Aid Society released the following statement on the death of Ramos, a Legal Aid client:

“Our hearts ache for Edwin Ramos, who was detained at Rikers Island and died earlier this morning in DOC custody. He is yet another New Yorker whose life has been taken by the City’s dysfunctional jail system, and an immediate, swift, and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is essential.

Just days ago, Mr. Ramos spoke with family and showed no signs of distress. This morning, he was scheduled to take a plea — before his father — that would have allowed him to begin rebuilding his life outside of jail. He will never get the chance to start that new chapter.

Any information related to Mr. Ramos’ death must be immediately disclosed to his family, loved ones, and counsel. This situation requires full accountability and transparency. It is disgraceful that the Department’s failures resulted in a court officer having to be the one to inform Mr. Ramos’ father, in court, of his son’s death, and unacceptable that counsel was informed through the press rather than through direct outreach from the Department.

With the holiday season approaching, this loss is especially painful. Our sincere condolences go out to Mr. Ramos’ family, friends, and loved ones.”
