A Morris Park business was broken into overnight just weeks after a neighboring business had a similar experience.
Contis Bakery was broken into in the early morning hours on Friday. The owner, Sal Paljevic, says one of his employees came in around 4 a.m. and noticed the damage.
The front door is visibly smashed. Police say the suspect then stole two registers containing almost $800.
As of Friday night, no arrests have been made, but a suspect was caught on camera.
"We're able to get through something like this. I'm not going to say it's easy, but we opened at 8 and just kept moving basically. But I feel for somebody new. It could've been a big hiccup,” said Paljevic.
This break-in comes just two weeks after Chocolate Place, a few stores down, was also broken into.
Police say their front door was also smashed and the register was removed.
“We further appeal to all our elected representatives and the Office of the Mayor, to consider putting in place programs that would support small businesses addressing the significant safety challenges that our City is confronting, including upgrades to their facades and security systems, as part of the newly launched Blueprint for NYC's economic recovery,” said Dr. Camelia Tepelus, executive director of the Morris Park Businesses Improvement District.
The BID is encouraging businesses to install security gates.
Paljevic says he was against the idea in the past as he wanted to preserve the home-like feeling of his business, but that now he says he may not have another choice.
