Minority House Leader Hakeem Jeffries and New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani met on Friday in East New York, according to statements released by their spokespeople.
Mamdani left the meeting without word of endorsement from Jeffries, although the pair described the meeting as "constructive" and say they plan to reconvene.
Justin Chermol, a spokesperson for House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, released the following statement:
"Earlier today, Leader Hakeem Jeffries met with Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for Mayor in New York City. The discussion took place in the East New York section of the 8th Congressional District and lasted an hour.
The meeting between Leader Jeffries and Assemblyman Mamdani was constructive, candid and community-centered, with a particular focus on affordability. Leader Jeffries and Assemblyman Mamdani discussed a variety of other important issues, including public safety, rising antisemitism, gentrification and the importance of taking back the House in 2026.
They agreed to reconvene shortly, alongside other members of the New York City congressional delegation and a few high level community leaders."
A spokesperson for Mamdani's campaign, Jeffrey Lerner, released the following statement:
"Assemblyman Mamdani was pleased to meet with Leader Hakeem Jeffries in East New York today.
Their hour-long conversation was candid and constructive, focused on the cost of living crisis facing New Yorkers and the importance of Democrats taking back the House in 2026.
As a next step, both agreed to reconvene soon with additional members of the New York City delegation, along with key community leaders."
